InStyle Checks Out: The Gordon Bar in N.Y.C.

There’s something secret-feeling and exclusive about a second-floor bar, even if anyone can walk in. Such is the case at the newly opened The Gordon Bar at the Sixty SoHo, a swanky hotel in New York.

Up a flight of stairs, hang a left, and let the sounds of hushed conversations pull you. You’ll enter into living room-like space designed by the esteemed and innately stylish Tara Bernerd; the look was inspired by classic uptown cocktail dens and the comfort of a home, albeit one belonging to a cultivated aesthete. How many homes do you go to with a massive Helmut Newton monograph on the coffee table?

What to Drink:
The pedigree behind the bar is pretty serious. Erik VanderWal, formerly of Pravda, and Francis Harris, of Eleven Madison Park, riff on classics. The must-have here is the Figs & Sage ($17), a bourbon cocktail with xtabentum (an anise-flavored Mexican liqueur), sherry, and fig preserve that’s then sharpened by lemon and topped with sage.

The Downtown Luxury Boutique Hotel, Reimagined: New York's New SIXTY SoHo

I fell for the newly rebranded SIXTY SoHo when I scoped out the titles on the small ladder bookshelf in my room: Keith Richards’ autobiography, the Steve Jobs biography, Humans of New York,Dickens’ Great Expectations, Ayn Rand and Leonard Cohen’s Book of Longing.

Clearly a human being—one with a strong point of view, sense of style and sense of play—had had a hand in the details. Someone had signed off not only on the Sferra linens but also on the fun parts. (And staying in a luxury hotel should always be fun.)

That someone is Jason Pomeranc, who opened the hotel as 60 Thompson in 2001. Back then, he was a pioneer, both of the neighborhood, which had plenty of shopping and dining but few hotels, and of the “lifestyle hotel” trend. “I think we helped create the market,” he says now. “It’s wonderful to see how a few hotels, like ours, changed how the entire industry views the basic core idea of what ‘boutique’ means, what ‘lifestyle’ means, what a room is supposed to look like, what it’s supposed to feel like. I think if someone had said in 2001 that today Marriott, Hilton and Starwood would all have multiple brands of what they learned from the boutique world, people would have thought that was a radical vision statement.”

But the boutique lifestyle hotel business took off big-time in the first decade of this century. Thompson Hotels became a global brand with a large following and new partnerships. And then it was time for a change.

Pomeranc and his original partners (his brothers and another hotelier) parted ways with one of those new partners in 2013, selling them most of the hotels and the Thompson brand name. But he kept five, including the flagship, which recently relaunched as SIXTY SoHo, following a multimillion-dollar renovation. “My brothers and I saw the hotel as our baby in its original incarnation,” he says. “It’s where I learned the hotel industry.”

The new version reflects all they lessons they had along the way, and is the flagship of their new brand, SIXTY Hotels. This next mini-empire already has two more hotels in New York, one in L.A., one coming in Miami later this year, and a sixth just announced for a 2016 opening in Montreal.

Like a mid-century modern living room, with Italian bar snacks.

Here's a look around the Gordon Bar, the newly-revamped cocktail lounge in Jason Pomeranc's Sixty Soho hotel. It's the first of the hotel's dining venues to reopen since downtown hit-maker John McDonald took over all of them with partner Steven Eckler (former managing partner at The Red Cat and The Harrison) this past summer. The upstairs lobby lounge, which used to be Thom Bar, is now very modern and very stylish, outfitted with a wide array of mid-century furniture, a zinc bar, and one of those green walls covered in plants.

There's a small Italian-leaning menu of bar snacks like beef sliders with fries, arancini with prosciutto and pistachios, and pork sausage with tomato and pepper sauce to go with the drinks. Cocktails themselves range from a couple classics (a gimlet, a boulevardier) to a rum toddy, a brandy punch, and house cocktails like the Torres, made with kaffir-infused white rum, hibiscus, lime, and agave.

In February, McDonald will also open Sessanta, a coastal Italian restaurant, in the hotel space that until recently housed Kittichai.

The newly opened Sixty Soho is set to bring a little bit of Europe into the heart of downtown Manhattan

Formerly the 60 Thompson hotel, New York’s Sixty Soho – opened this month – is set to be the flagship property for the nascent American luxury boutique-hotel brand Sixty. That the British interior designer Tara Bernerd was enlisted to develop its aesthetic, rather than a homegrown talent, shouldn’t come as a surprise. Hotels already in her portfolio include Belgraves in London’s Chelsea and her intention with this property was to create an interior that would reference the city’s global character.

“I wanted to create a home from home” Ms Bernerd told me when describing the style of Sixty Soho, “that brings a little bit of Europe –  Parisian chic, a taste of Milan, a bit of Britain –  into the melting pot of downtown Manhattan. It’s a real homage to all those people from different cultures around the world that visit and live in New York.”

Catering to the brand’s target guests – those with a “low-key and understated lifestyle” – the design has what Bernerd calls “an academic, edgy and industrial glamour”. Pierre Chareau’s Maison d’Verre – the 1930s-build "House of Glass" in Paris - set a benchmark style for the project.

Today, the soul of the hotel lives in the characterful lobby lounge and bar, which blend into one another spatially and stylistically. The former features large picture windows and masses of books, mostly by Taschen; the latter, the Gordon Bar, combines the upscale vibe of a private members’ club with a relaxed, lived-in feel. It features vintage floor tiling, cow-hide rugs and eclectic furniture, as well as an airy greenhouse-like private function room with a “living wall of vertical gardening” at each end.

For Bernerd, the bar "reflects a European home, while still embracing that New York downtown energy". Adding to that homely touch, it is decorated with eccentric artworks from the private collection of Jason Pomeranc, the creator of the Sixty brand, as well as pieces chosen by the English art dealer Jay Jopling, who Bernerd describes as her "personal art guru". Further works by Harland Miller, the British artist known for his giant paintings of Penguin book covers, hang throughout the common areas and in each of the guestrooms.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is Sixty Loft, the hotel’s best suite. The two-storey residence includes a living room with an L-shaped velvet sofa, a four-poster bed, a fireplace as well as a private balcony in addition to a rooftop deck with sun loungers, offering unobstructed views of the city, including of the Freedom Tower and the Empire State Building. So impressed was Russell Crowe upon seeing this space, Sixty Soho’s manager would later tell me, that he expressed interest in purchasing the loft for himself. Fortuitously, though, it remains available for bookings.
